Chamblee has several single- family home neighborhoods. Frontier Woods is a great little neighborhood, filled with mid-century homes built in the 1960’s. It is located off of I-85 and Shallowford Road. Dresden Drive is another boundary street.
Frontier Woods was built in the 1960’s from land that was originally part of World War I’s Camp Gordon. (Camp Gordon later became today’s Dekalk-Peachtree Airport or PDK).
The neighborhood is made up of just three streets, Frontier Trail, Frontier Court and Pioneer Court. Frontier Trail travels through the neighborhood from Shallowford Road to Dresden Drive. Contained in that area are 80 single-family homes. The original styles offered were just three floor plans — a ranch style, and two different split-levels.
Dresden Elementary is adjacent to the neighborhood. Additional schools that serve the neighborhood are Sequoyah Middle School and Cross Keys High School. St. Pius X Catholic High School is located near the Shallowford entrance to the neighborhood.
One boundary of the neighborhood is the North Fork of Peachtree Creek. Across from there is Dresden Park. It is now part of the City of Chamblee’s Parks Department and various improvements to the park are being made.
Frontier Woods has convenient access to a Publix Market located across I-85 from the community. There is a Kroger located at Buford Highway and Clairmont Roads, and a new Whole Foods has opened in Chamblee on Peachtree Blvd.
There are numerous international dining options on Buford Highway (you’ll hear many references to BuHi and an organization call We Love BuHi. in 2017, the cities of Chamblee and Doraville did a joint Living Centers Initiative (LCI) study of Buford Highway, and created the Buford Highway Master Plan. While this will most likely take years to implement, it has great proposals to reduce the number of lanes on Buford Highway and add bike lanes and other pedestrian-friendly features.
More information about the plan, and about the City of Chamblee, can be found at the City of Chamblee website.
